New mattress for handicapped daughter

A customer asked

I am looking for a new bed for my handicapped daughter. She breaks beds at an alarming rate due to her unstoppable habit of using them as a trampoline. She is only 4' 7" but weighs too much at 10.5 stone. Now, at 27 years old, she still sits cross legged and bounces. We have tried divans, wooden slats, spring slats, metal frame, she has broken them all, each within a year or so of each other. Any ideas as to a bed frame that could last longer?

Money is beginning to not be an issue as we are spending a fortune already!

Hi Tracey.

This really is a dilemma for you and was the subject of a very long conversation between Ryan and myself. We came up with a couple of solutions and as they are obviously untried and untested it is up to you to make the final decision.

Firstly, you have an option of a low slung platform top base frame (8" on legs). On top of this utilise a very cheap foam mattress (6"). The foam mattress will act as the shock absorber to the base frame and theoretically should take the stress of the mattress being used as a trampoline. A standard base height is 12 - 14" so this addition should not take the overall bed above the norm. Although for your daughter's height at less than five foot, I would try to get as low as possible.

The second option is similar to the above. We think a base frame could be simply constructed (8" height - sitting directly on to the floor) and a cheap ortho sprung mattress (10") could be used as an inset. On top of this would be your regular mattress. The reduction in height would also make it easier for your daughter to get into and out of the bed itself.

As a side note, a mattress sitting directly on to the floor is not ideal for ventilation reasons and so regular turnings will be necessary.

Hope this helps Vivien.

A new one on us and hope our thoughts help.

Please let us know on the result.

John and Ryan.
