Origins Pocket 1500 vs Origins Comfort mattress? Which is best?
Hi there,
My partner and I are in the market for a new mattress and are torn between the Origins Comfort 1000 and the Origins Pocket 1500.
We are both side sleepers, she weighs 57kg and I weigh 77kg. We find our current mattress far too firm (which is a firm tension admittedly) both in terms of discomfort and waking up feeling stiff.
My gut feeling is to go for the Origins Comfort due to being side sleepers, but I worry that won't provide enough support for myself and also that I may end up getting quite hot in the summer months? Hence considering the Origins Pocket.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Callum.
Hi Callum,
Thanks for getting in touch about a replacement mattress for your punishingly firm one. We're sorry you're sleeping so badly but we can certainly help rectify that!
The issue most people have with choosing a mattress in a retail store is that they confuse the spring tension (ie soft, medium and firm) with the comfort feel of the mattress (also soft, medium or firm). Whats worse is even the retailers fail to disclose the difference, quite possibly becasue they too don't understand the key difference.
Spring Tensions Vs Comfort Preference in Mattresses:
Pocket spring tensions are based on your body weight and the tension should always be picked on this and not how you want the mattress to feel. The springs are manufactured for weight tolerances and have no bearing on the comfort. If yoy pick too firm or too soft a spring the support will be all wrong. So even with gorgeous natural fillings you will be sleeping in discomfort.
Luckily, we hand made each of our mattresses with a tailored spring tension based in our body weight. So we know each mattress has the ideal support you may need. At your weights, you both need a 1.4 medium gauge pocket spring. Which both the Origins Comfort and the Origins Pocket 1500 are available in.
Spring Tension | Wire diameter (Gauge) | Weight Range |
---|---|---|
Soft | 1.2mm | Bespoke Tension (Please Call) |
Medium | 1.4mm | Upto 16 stone |
Firm | 1.6mm | 16 stone plus |
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic | 1.9mm | 20 stone plus |
Comfort layers then provide the overall feel. As side sleepers you will need something forgiving to allow you to sink slightly before the comfort kicks in as a secondary support layer. The main differences between the Origins Comfort and the Origins Pocket 1500 is the comfort feel. The Origins Comfort is very soft, maybe too soft for you two and the Origins Pocket 1500 is a true medium with a top layer of 300GSM wool for breathability.
Based on your requirements we would advise you choose the Origins Pocket 1500 in the Medium tension.
It’s progressive enough to accommodate a front or side sleeper. At your weights, it will allow more of a soft sink in the very top layer before medium support lower down the upholstery layers. It’s also two sided so can be turned and rotated each month to extend the lifespan compared to one sided models.
Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress

As this is a 2 sided mattress we recommend you turn it each month to help even out natural settlement and get the very longest lifespan out of this hand made mattress. You can read our mattress care guide here to help.
