Thought my mattress was firm but seems a little soft - my trunk aches. I have pocket springs with one layer of firm latex and wool n20ml soft foam

Hi Lalita,

Thank you for your question. The firmness or comfort of a Latex mattress is determined by the density of the Latex along with the amount of pressure your body weight applies to the foam. As Latex only requires pressure to be able to mould to you, the lighter your body weight, the firmer it will feel.

The age of your mattress can also affect how the mattress feels. A new mattress will always feel firmer than one that has had time to settle. Although latex is more durable than memory foam, it too will soften over time and not be as supportive as it once was.

What is the spring tension of your mattress? If you do not have sufficient body weight to activate the springs you will not receive any support from them as the springs need to move with you as you sleep. If the spring tension is too firm it can cause lower back pain.

Artisan Spring Tension Weight Range
Soft Available as a Bespoke Product (Please Call)
Medium Upto 16 stone / 101kg
Firm Over 16 stone / 101kg

The way you sleep is as important as how you like the mattress to feel. We do not recommend firm upholstery for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders and hips. If it is very firm it can even cause pain in the ribs and lower back as they pivot on their shoulders and hips which puts pressure on the lower back. We do not recommend soft upholstery layers for front and back sleepers as if front sleepers sink in too much it causes the lower back to overarch and if back sleepers sink in too much it raises the ankles and neck causing lower back and neck pain.

If you prefer a latex mattress I would recommend our Origins Pocket Latex 1500 mattress. This has a medium density foam but for lighter bodyweights would feel quite firm. It has a medium spring tension as standard which will support body weights up to approximately 16.5 stone. The 2000 spring option will support body weights up to 22 stone.

If you let me know what mattress you are currently sleeping on I will be able to advise you further. I hope this helps and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Michaela
