Problems with residential home mattress for elderly

A customer asked

Hello there! My mum has recently moved into a residential home and the mattress on her bed is causing her to have sore hips, NOT pressure sores as she is quite mobile, but she is frail, only weighs 7 stone, and has had one hip replacement and has pins and screws in the other. The home has tried to see if the NHS will provide a different mattress but the response has been that my mum is not classed as 'high risk', ie. she is not vulnerable to pressure sores yet! Consequently, the home and myself are totally at a loss as to the best mattress for her. She suffers with dementia and gets very distressed if I take her out, so going out to try different mattresses is not possible, so It will be a case of trying really hard to find her the best solution without much input from her. Thank you so much, in anticipation of some helpful advice.

Hi Lynda,
It is not possible to make a recommendation or provide an opinion on the performance and quality of the majority of products on the market because the manufacturers do not disclose the details of construction and upholstery. Your mum is very light weight and therefore she needs a mattress that will support her and provide comfort in the upholstery layers. Our Origins Comfort 1000 is an ideal mattress for people of lighter weights and I would suggest you look at the specification of this on our site. If you require further advice prior to placing an order, please call our office. Kind regards Mike.
