Recommendation for the Best Mattress for Side Sleepers
Hi,
My partner and I are looking for the best mattress to suit our sleeping preferences. We are both side sleepers but I also occasionally sleep on my stomach. I weigh 96kg, while my partner weighs 67kg.
My partner really liked the feel of a Tempur mattress because of the deep sinking sensation and muscle relaxation it provided. I, on the other hand, prefer a medium-feel mattress with good support.
We’ve been considering your Artisan Luxury and Artisan Naturals models and appreciate the idea of a horsehair layer for that springy feel. We’ve also been recommended the Vispring Herald Supreme, although we haven’t had the chance to try it.
Based on our preferences, could you recommend the best mattress from your range that would suit both of us?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Best regards,
Dimitri
Hi Demitri,
Thank you for your question. The upholstery layers on top of the springs determine how the mattress feels. The fibres that are used and the amount of these fibres, and the way that they are layered create the level of comfort, and each mattress has a different feel. The way you like the mattress to feel along with your sleep positions. As side sleepers, you require cushioning for your shoulders and hips to sink into. However, as you sometimes sleep on your front, soft upholstery layers would not be suitable, sinking in too much when on your front, your lower back to overarch causing pain in this area.
The Vispring Herald has a firmer level of comfort in the upholstery layers. This is ideal for front sleepers but would be too firm when sleeping on your side. Our comparable mattress to this is the Artisan Bespoke.

The Artisan Luxury has a softer medium level of comfort in the 100% natural fibre upholstery layers, which would give you plenty of cushioning for your shoulders and hips but would be too soft when sleeping on your front. The comparable Vispring model is the Vispring Devonshire.

The Artisan Naturals has a true medium level of comfort in the 85% natural fibre upholstery layers, which has cushioning in the top layers for your shoulders and hips to sink into but is more supportive underneath so that you would not sink in too when on your front. The comparable Vispring model is the Vispring Regal Superb. Alternatively, if you want a 100% natural fibre mattress that contains horsehair, you could look at the Artisan Bespoke 004. The comfort layers of this mattress feel the same as the Artisan Naturals, the only difference is the natural fibre content.

All the mattresses above utilise the handmade vanadium-coated calico pocket springs which are the best springs you can put in a mattress. The spring tension is based on your height and body weight to give you the correct level of support. We would pair you both with a medium spring tension.

It can be difficult when each person requires a different level of comfort from the mattress as it is not possible to make a mattress with different upholstery layers, not even in a zip and link. We always recommend opting for the firmer option and adding a mattress topper to one side for the person who likes it softer. You can soften a mattress that is too firm but you can not firm up a mattress that is too soft.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
