Recommendations for a side sleeper with osteoporosis and fybromyalgia
Hello,
Our mattress needs replacing and I have read your guides with a lot of interest - thank you.
I have a maximum of £1500 to spend on a kingsize mattress. I'm 5 ' 7 and weigh 14 stone. I'm 56 and have osteoporosis of the spine and also have pain often at night now in my shoulders and hips. I used to enjoy sleeping on my side but my sleep is now badly affected by old pocket sprung mattress that sags.
Any suggestions would be very helpful as I am feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choice out there. I have an open mind as to type of mattress.
With thanks Caroline
Hi Caroline,
Thank you for your question. As I am sure you are aware, the symptoms of Fibromyalgia are varied and there is not one mattress that suits all sufferers of this painful condition.
Your shoulder and hip pain indicate that your current mattress is too firm and has made you change the way that you sleep. The problem is that once your sleep positions change, even with a mattress more suited to your original sleep position, your body remembers the sleep positions and continues to move to these during sleep. I would not recommend a soft upholstery mattress, although you are a side sleeper mainly, if you sink in too much either on your back or front it can cause lower back pain. Given that you already suffer from osteoporosis of your spine, it is essential to ensure support both in the upholstery layers and the springs.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
At your height and body weight, the medium spring tension will provide you with the correct level of support. We would need your partner's height and weight to ensure the support would be correct for them.
I would recommend the Origins Pocket 1500 mattress which had a true medium level of comfort in the upholstery layers and the medium spring tension as standard. If this feels too firm, especially during the first 12 months whilst the upholstery layers are settling, you can add a separate mattress topper for additional cushioning with the supporting layers underneath.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
