Replacing Healthbeds memory flex mattress

A customer asked

Hi there.

We currently have a Healthbeds Memory Flex Mattress which we bought in 2009.

I find it very uncomfortable although my wife finds it okay.

Previously we had a millbrook mattress (cant remember the model) but it was springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring around 1500 springs if I recall and it was really good.

But my wife got disturbed when I turned over (which I do a lot at night).

Recently we decided to replace this mattress - we have a continental king bed (160cm wide).

We thought about going for a zip & Link vi-spring, but were advised that zip&link is only recommended for 6ft plus beds as on our bed, each mattress would be less than the width of a standard single mattress.

I can see this makes sense.

Secondly, we settled for a vi-spring bedstead supreme mattress which we both found comfortable.

I have always believed that I need a firm support mattress (because I weigh 16.5 St) and because I don't like the feeling of when I feel a dip in the bed over time.

However, I found the Bedstead Supreme on a vi spring really comfortable to lie on whilst in the showroom.

They did not have a firm mattress (on the same brand) that I could try for comparison.

I tried what they considered to be the closest feel to what a firm would feel like and to be honest I preferred the medium, although the firm was not that much firmer so I could get used to it.

My questions are: 1.

Would a medium support be suitable for me (I find it comfortable, but would this comfort level be retained over a period of time?) bearing in mind I am 16 and a half stone.

Hi Hitesh.

Good question.

The first thing to realise is that a 'medium' tension is not standard for all manufacturers.

It depends on what gauge spring they have used.

In the case of the Vi Spring Bedstead Supreme their specification states that they use " ..1.42mm wire springs, 51mm in diameter".

They do not say whether this relates to Soft, Medium or Firm (SMoF) so it is quite difficult to assess which spring gauge would be similar to the one you tried.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

the combined upholstery weight on the VS BS is 3400 gsm split into 1000gsm Bonded Wool and Cotton, 1000 gsm horsehair and 1200 gsm of Blended Wool and Cotton.

This is quite a good upholstery count and I would offer our Artisan Naturals as a contender for comparison or our Artisan Bespoke for a better constructed mattress for a significant difference in price.

Fortunately with all Vi Spring models it is incredibly easy to like for like comparisons.

2.

Would a zip-and link be an issue on this size?

Zip and Links are a compromise to a one piece mattress - either for access or vastly different bodyweights.

Your man is right saying that Z&L in a king size will only give you 2'6 of mattress each .

BUT, as with all mattresses the topper you are advised to use will tie these two sections together quite nicely.

You do not mention your wife's weight which would be a factor in your choice.

If she is of a relatively lightweight her choice of spring tension would have to be softer than yours.

3.

If I decided to go for firm and my wife prefers a medium, is it okay to go with this on the same mattress, or is it better to go with Zip and Link?

Your advise much appreciated..

Mattresses as a one piece can generally only have Soft and Medium or Medium and Firm as a choice.

Ziplinks can have Soft and Firm or indeed any combination.

Hope this helps Hitesh.

Please let me know what you decide upon.

Kind Regards Gary
