Hi April,

Many thanks for your comment about mattress bases.

There's no need to buy a new mattress base when buying a new bed. The only reason for changing your base is if it's broken or you want to change the aesthetic, ie colour, fabric or style.

There are 3 main types of mattress base available online and in stores. Starting in cost/quality order.

  1. Slatted bed bases and frames
  2. Divan Bases (Sprung and platform top)
  3. Bedframes and bedsteads

Slatted Bases Explained:

Slatted bases are the least suitable for high-quality mattresses as the gaps between the slats can cause damage and settlement over time as the mattress is forced between the gaps. This is especially true is the slats have gaps over  2 inches between them. There is a simple way to board over these slats to prevent this. You can follow our guide to fix a slatted base so it's suitable for any mattress.

Divan Bases Explained:

Divans are the most advanced in terms of comfort with a mattress. This is cause they offer a sofer more uniform support system for all mattresses. Spring edge divans offer progressive support for all mattresses. They also come in a variety of fabrics and finishes for the base.

Bedframes Explained:

Lastly, bedframes and bedsteads are the fashion queens of the bed base world! They showcase the very vest in bedroom furniture styling. Avoid slatted bedframes and choose ones with an upholstered base similar to a divan base.

Sleep well!
