sprung slatted bed base

Hello, I have a cheap sprung slatted bed base which i didn't realize until reading your article is not suitable for memory mattresses. Although i am not attached to the frame itself, the reason i bought it was to have the extra storage space under it. Although you can get divans with draws they don't seem to offer as much storage space, so i was thinking of using boards as you suggest for extra mattress support. However the effectiveness of the mattress is the most important thing to me as i suffer from chronic back, neck and hip pain, so i wanted to ask if i add mdf boards will this allow the mattress to perform to it's best or will a divan bed be the only way to get the best support/most support out of a foam mattress? if the boards will work just as well as having a divan base, please can you advise if mdf, plywood or Pegboard would be best to use? and is it a case of simply laying the board on top of the current slates and then the mattress on top of the board? additionally, the current mattress i have has a very big sag issue, which i thought was down to the materials being dislodged during 2 house moves over the last couple of years, but perhaps it is in fact due to the bed frame... is it too late for the mattress or will replacing the bed frame make the mattress as good as it was again? your expert advice would be very much appreciated, Adele

Hi Adele,

Thank you for your question.

What we can say is that without boarding, you are likely to experience dipping, sagging or ridging, which occurs as result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats and where the central support bar is, sagging.

The best answer is to go for a platform or sprung edge divan ideally.  This ensures a consistent surface and removes the issue of slats causing dipping or damage to your mattress.  Whilst a nice looking bed frame is a consideration when buying a new bed, you also have to weigh this up against the impact of certain slatted bed frames.  Particularly against your mattresses longevity, comfort and consistency.

If you do opt for the boarding solution, with MDF (3-5mm) this will still give you the spring effect from your slats, but may make the mattress feel slightly firmer. Plywood is usually too inflexible to provide you with the spring effect and peg board is as good as MDF provided it is as thin (3-5mm). As for whether it is too late for your current mattress, I would say give it a go, because it may resolve the issues meaning that you can put off the expensive purchase of a new mattress for a little longer.
