Support for shoulders but enough give for wider hips/ small waist
Hi,
Finding it difficult to find a mattress. I'm 5 ft 4 and 9 stone 3, hubby 5 ft 9 and 11 stone.
Husband prefers a firmer mattress but says feels ok with a medium,.we don't want a split zip mattress.
Been trying out medium mattresses at the shops- finding if they support my shoulders, too hard for hips (mostly side sleeper, but sometimes back) and if accommodate hips, shoulders feel rounded when sleeping on back. Felt like this trying out hypnos wool origins 6 in a medium on a hard base bedframe.
I also have quite flexible joints and like some support, and also like to be able to turn over easily at night and not be sucked into mattress (don't like memory foam).
Currently sleeping on a firm mattress on slatted base which gives me hip ache. Want to keep my bedframe.
What should I be looking for? What mattress to suit?
Thanks
Hi Louise,
Thank you for your question. Finding a mattress that is suitable for a couple who have different comfort preferences, how you like the mattress to feel, can be difficult. Firstly, let\'s look at the Hypnos Wool 6 mattress and why it is not right for you.
The Hypnos Wool 6 mattress has 8 fleeces in the upholstery layers, that is 16. 3 kg of pure soft wool that you will sink into that will wick away heat and moister quicker than any other fibre. This would be great if you just slept on your side and your hubby liked a soft overall feel.
Softer upholstery is ideal for side sleepers as it allows your shoulders and hips to sink into the upholstery. Our closest comparison to this mattress would be our Artisan Luxury which has a softer medium feel in the upholstery layers which are wool and cotton sandwiched with horsehair and horsetail which offer support to the softer layers helping them retain their loft.
I would not recommend this mattress for you as you also sleep on your back. When you sink in too much when sleeping on your back, it raises your ankles and neck which can cause lower back and neck pain.
The medium in the mattress is the spring tension. This is will give you the correct level of support based on your heights and weights.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
I would recommend a true medium feel in the upholstery layers such as our Artisan Bespoke 004 mattress, this will have cushioning in the top layers for your shoulders and hips but will be more supportive underneath so that you will not sink in too much when sleeping on your back.
Please note the soft spring tension has been discontinued since the making of this video.
Our Artisan range of mattresses is designed for a pocket sprung base. Placing them onto a slatted or platform base will firm up the internal support of the mattress. If the space between your slats is less than 3 inches (7.5 cm) we would recommend placing an old or cheap duvet or blanket over the slats. This will protect the upholstery layers on the underside of the mattress from indentations. If the space is larger than 3 inches, we would recommend boarding over the slats to give the mattress a uniform surface and prevent the springs from settling in the gap.
Zip and link mattresses are ideal if you have limited access to your room or choice. Due to the amount of upholstery fillings we put in our mattresses they are not very flexible. They are also easier to turn over as you are only turning half a mattress at a time and they eliminate motion disturbance.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
