A customer asked

I have spent a lot of time looking at your advice page but am a little confused. I am interested in either the Artisan Pocket 2000 or the Artisan 1600 Calico but unsure regarding firmness and link with spring thickness. My partner and I would both like a fairly firm mattress but like others the difference in weight is considerable ie 17 and 11 stone. Would medium suffice if I bought the Artisan 2000 but with a variation in spring tension to accommodate the difference in weight? Would the 2000 not provide more support than the 1600 or does it depend on the springs and do the springs determine firmness? One of us sleeps predominantly on the back and the other front/side, does this have an impact on what I should buy? What would you advise?

Hi there,

The number of springs referred to in the descriptions of the two products you are looking at are specific to a king size mattress, and these would be proportionally more or less dependent upon the size of mattress purchased.

Both products can have a selected spring tension in soft, medium or firm to suit and in your case with the weight differential, I would suggest a medium firm split.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Whilst the number of springs can be an indicator of firmness, the guage of the actual springs determines tension, but in any event, the comfort of the mattress will come from the upholstery layers.

The overall feel of the mattress will also be affected by whatever type of base it is placed on.

Of the two products the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 is likely to feel slightly firmer as this has a firmer spring unit.

I would suggest that you opt for the Artisan Naturals or the Artisan Bespoke 004.

Please view all the products via the links provided and then call our office on 0161 437 4419 for more specific advice regarding suitability and to confirm the base situation.

Kind Regards Gary
