A customer asked

I am planning to buy an Artisan 004 zip and link bed, one side soft, the other medium - I weigh 9 stone and my husband just over 13. Having read the article above, I decided to buy a topper for the new bed to use right away. However, having read some of your replies below, you suggest not buying one until you are sure you need one.
I thought your article said that you really should buy one both for added comfort and to extend the life of the mattress. So, I am confused! Can you guide me, please. Also, I was looking at a wool topper from The Wool Room that is thicker than the one from Soak and Sleep. Would the thicker one be better, with a thin protector or should I buy a thinner topper and a thicker protector? What factors should I take into account when making my choice? It is the most expensive bed I have ever bought (and I am now 74!) so I want it to be fabulous!

Hi Margaret,
A topper should be added for comfort, but should only be purchased if you find the mattress purchased not to be as comfortable as expected. The advice to hold off until you have settled into your new mattress is for economic purposes, as you may find it to be an unnecessary expense.

I am sorry if this appears somewhat confusing and as far as selecting a topper is concerned, it really does depend upon what feel you require. If you want to sink in, then buy the thicker topper, if you just want a slightly softer feel, the thinner topper should be purchased. The thick wool topper you refer to may generate heat and may be great in the winter, but may be too hot in summer. I hope that this helps.
