Undecided which medium comfort mattress to buy

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 0 comments

Hi, earlier today I spoke with a very helpful member of your team for mattress advice and since the call I've looked online at the ones recommended (John Rylan Express medium comfort, Artisan 2000 Tailored Pocket and Artisan Naturals) but I'm still undecided.

Aside from the obvious price points and upholstery fillings, how do each of these compare regarding comfort levels? What difference does the spring count and type make to each of them? And are any of them superior for minimising motion transfer from a heavier sleeping partner (14.5 st, I'm approx 10st)?

Many thanks

Elle

Hi Elle,

Thank you for your question. The Artisan Naturals, Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 and the medium comfort John Ryan Express mattress all have the same medium feel in the comfort layers, you would not really notice much difference if you were to lie on them side by side. A medium level of comfort is suitable for all sleep positions as it provides cushioning for shoulders and hips to sink into when sleeping on your side but is supportive underneath so that front and back sleepers do not sink in too much.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Naturals Upholstery Layers

John Ryan By Design Artisan Naturals
1 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton.
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover
3 1250gsm Rebound Poly Cotton
4 1500gsm 100% Pure Mohair
5 1600 Calico encased Pocket Springs [ 49mm ] [1.28mm ]
Total GSM 3950gsm

Both the Artisan Naturals and the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 have the same 85% natural upholstery layers, which means they have a cooler sleep surface and are very breathable. The difference is the spring units. The Artisan Naturals has 1600 handmade vanadium coated calico pocket springs, which are the best springs you can put in a mattress, and the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 has two tiers of 1000 half-size spun bonded springs. The machine-made steel springs are not quite as flexible as the handmade springs. Layering the springs so that they interact with each other, making them provide slightly softer support, replicates the level of support in the Artisan Naturals but reduces the cost as these are cheaper than the handmade counterparts.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

The John Ryan Express has 1000 spun bonded springs with a medium 1.4 gauge only. The spring count is not as important as the gauge of wire used, as this creates the spring tension to provide the correct level of support. This mattress has more natural fibres than the Origins range but less than the Artisan range, making it an ideal mattress for those customers on a budget who want a good quality mattress with some natural fibres.

Pocket springs reduce motion disturbance as these are in individual pockets and only the springs that are active move with you. However, they are close together and some people are sensitive to the movement of their partners. The type of base call also affects the motion of a mattress, such as sprung slatted bases. The only way to eliminate motion transfer is with a zip and link mattress. All of our Artisan range of mattresses are available in a zip and link in kingsize and above. The John Ryan Express mattress is only available in a double and kingsize, and there is no zip and link option for this mattress.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
