What are the advantages of a mattress enhancer/topper?
Looking at all the options to purchase a good quality medium pocket sprung mattress. Are there any advantages or disadvantages in purchasing a natural fibre mattress enhancer. I note some have micro springs in them , some do not. I do not want one that is down to the bed , but detachable. What are the advantages or disadvantages of such a purchase. Will this prolong the life of the mattress
Hi Finrit,
Thank you for your question. We always recommend a mattress enhancer or mattress topper that will complement your mattress and not change it from one type to another such as putting a memory foam topper on a natural fibre mattress. You can put a natural fibre mattress topper such as wool or cotton onto any fibre filled mattress without changing it. The natural fibres will provide a cooler sleep surface and help to regulate your body temperature.
We do not recommend micro HD springs as these take up space where more luxurious fibres could be. Nor do we recommend pillow top mattresses (a mattress with a mattress topper attached) as you can not prolong the life of the mattress by regularly turning the mattress over. With a two sided mattress the upholstery layers get time to rest and regain loft whereas, with a one sided mattress, your hips tend to be in the same position which means this area of the mattress is in constant use.
A mattress topper provides an additional comfort layer to the mattress. It prolongs the lifespan of the mattress as it is the topper that takes the impact of you sleeping and moving around on the mattress rather than the upholstery layers. This means that the upholstery layers take longer to settle and reach final settlement.
The depth of the topper would determine how much softness it would provide, the thicker the topper the softer it will feel. We recommend trying a mattress first to get a true feel for the upholstery layers before determining how much you need to soften it, if at all, before purchasing a mattress topper. A 5 cm topper would not be much softer than putting a duvet under your sheet whereas a 10 cm mattress topper would be a lot softer and could make the mattress too soft.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact our small friendly team on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
