What mattress for disabled mother?

A customer asked

I am looking to purchase a single divan bed for my disabled mother and would welcome your advice on specifications.

My mother weights almost 15 stones and is 5'6".

A great deal time is spent in bed as she suffers with mobility issues and has considerable aches and pains from arthritis and brittle bone disease.

At present my mother has a foam style mattress topper (not solid) aid comfort and to reduce pressure areas, provided by her occupational therapist.

My mother is tending towards a soft mattress for comfort but support is also a factor.

Some single beds I have tried seem to feel as though in a ship bobbing about on a rough sea and I'm concerned that they would lend themselves towards her toppling out of the bed.

Your thoughts and recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Hi Charlie.

This is going to be tricky purchase for you.

Firstly, you will have to decide on how big or little your budget is going to be. Once this decision is made then it becomes relatively easy to determine what you can realistically get for this.

Initially, I would try to find the perfect mattress completely disregarding the price.

Take a pleasant afternoon at stores like John Lewis or Furniture Village and let me know which mattress you think would be most suitable for your mum's needs and requirements. If your mum is able to go with you then all well and good, but initially I think it is down to you to do the shortlist.

Please keep in touch.

John and Ryan.
