Why do many people below the weight threshold need a mattress of a higher tension?
I'm looking to purchase a mattress from your company. Looking at reviews from trustpilot and various forums.
I've noticed that many customers are recommended to buy a mattress with a spring tension which should theoretically 'fit', based on their bodyweight. E.G they are advised to get a medium tension mattress and are well below 16 stone, but then after trying the mattress and finding it too soft, they need to switch to a firm mattress instead?
Why is that? Why does it happen often? I'm asking as I may be in a similar boat once I purchase a medium tension mattress.
Thanks.
Hi,
Thank you for contacting us regarding a new John Ryan by Design Ltd mattress.
Purchasing a new mattress can be a minefield as you not only need to ensure that you receive the correct level of support but also the correct level of comfort.
Support is provided by the internal spring unit and this support is dictated by body weight and height. We would not recommend anyone going on to a firm tension mattress unless they are over 17.5st and the reason for this is that the internal spring unit needs to move when you move in order to create the support.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The comfort of a mattress is provided by all of the upholstery fibres which are on top of those springs and this is personal preference. However we would advise that a side sleeper can choose either a soft level of comfort or a medium as this will allow shoulders and hips to sink in slightly providing cushioning for those areas. A back sleeper would normally require a medium level of comfort so as to keep their spine aligned and a tummy sleeper should have a firmer level of comfort so that when sleeping on the tummy it does not create an unnatural arch in their back.
If a customer has purchased a medium tension mattress but then requires something firmer, we would advise choosing a mattress with a slightly firmer level of comfort and not from a support point of view.
The type of base that the mattress will go onto can also alter the overall feel of a mattress. Our Origins mattresses have been made to go onto a solid/slatted type base whereas our Artisan Range of mattresses have been made to go onto a sprung divan base which cushions the mattress.
If the Origins mattresses go onto a sprung divan base, this will slightly soften down the support however if the Artisan mattresses go onto a solid/slatted base, this will slightly firm up the internal support.
I would recommend speaking to one of our friendly team so that we can recommend a mattress which will suit your individual needs - 0161 437 4419. We look forward to speaking with you in the near future.
Kind regards Julie
