Will a slatted base cause mattress indentations?

For one person of 10 st weight sleeping on a slatted bed base (double bed)
Is a wool/ cotton, pocket sprung, soft tension bedstead mattress suitable?
Would it be more likely to develop indentations than a medium tensioned mattress?

Hi Roisin,

Great question about slatted bases and whether or not indentations will occur.

Slatted bases are fine for most mattresses providing the gaps between the slats are no further than 2inches apart. If they are further apart then this is where a mattress can, over time, conform to the gaps between the mattresses causing excess settlement and dips. You can easily prevent this by boarding over slats to make sure this doesn't happen. They provide a firmer support than a sprung edge divan. However, this difference is subtle in most quality mattresses.

Another confusing area for mattress consumers is spring tension and the firmness of the mattress. Spring tensions do not dictate the firmness feel of the mattress, they are based purely on your bodyweight. Which most people are surprised by. At your bodyweight, a medium tension 1.4 gauge pocket spring is best-suited to you. We wouldn't advise moving onto a soft 1.2 tension as this will not offer enough support.

It's the comfort layers or upholstery that provide the real feel to the mattress. You can see below how different fibres provide different feels. We would need to know the exact breakdown of the mattress you are considering to fully help, as combining fibres will change the overall feel of the mattress.
