Winter is almost upon us, and as the nights grow longer and temperatures plummet, your mattress and sleeping environment will play an essential part in keeping you insulated.
Unfortunately, many people suffer sleepless nights as a result of being too cold. It’s amazing to curl up for a long luxurious and soothing sleep, but not so much when you wake up shivering in your bed. With this in mind, we wanted to offer some advice on how you can stay warm and cosy in the cold night air.
Wear clothing to combat the cold
Wearing suitable night clothes can go a long way to keeping yourself comfortable and warm at night. Consider a nice pair of pyjamas or a large T-shirt, but make sure they are loose fitting and breathable. Instead of choosing clothing made from synthetic materials, pick the ones made from natural fibres such as wool, cotton or silk, as these offer more warmth in winter.
If you suffer from cold feet, you could even consider putting on a pair of soft bed socks. The extra layer will also improve circulation in your extremities, allowing you to quickly drift off to a peaceful slumber.
Make use of some warm water
It’s surprising the difference a warm bath before bed can have, as long as you don’t run it too hot. You don’t want it scorching, as it needs to be at a comfortable temperature for you to relax, warm your body, and get you ready for some sleep.
You could also make use of the good old-fashioned hot water bottle, as this is still one of the best ways to get nice and toasty at night. If you use a hot water bottle, then make sure it has a cover to protect your body from scalding, and so that it won’t suddenly feel cold during the night.
Drink for warmth
It’s true that drinking some coffee or a hot cup of tea can make you feel as though you’re getting warmed up. However, you’re body is actually losing heat because the caffeine only temporarily increases blood flow to the skin, so we recommend decaffeinated or herbal hot drinks.
You could even have a cup of warm milk, as this not only heats you up, it contains amino acids that help to better regulate your sleep cycle.
Get your blood pumping
Getting regular exercise is good for your body anyway, but it can also work to stop you feeling cold at night. When you work out, your blood flow to the skin is increased, which is why you can sometimes look red and flushed after exercising. This is just your body trying to release the heat that you’ve built up.
So, not only can exercise give you a rush of mood-enhancing endorphins, your blood will be pumping around your body, and with better blood flow your skin feels warmer. Remember, it’s important that you don’t work out too close to bedtime.
Have the right mattress
The quality of your mattress can of course make all the difference when it comes to getting the quality, cosy night’s sleep you deserve in winter, or any time of year. You need to check that your mattress has the right kind of sleep surface, which can retain heat as well as better regulate your body temperature, even if you’re already a hot sleeper.
