Advice on Ikea sized mattress

Emma asked

Hi, Firstly, thank you for putting together such a comprehensive advice section on your site.

The world of mattress buying seems to be a complete minefield and its very refreshing to see such an honest and informative approach.

Obviously we are in the market for a new mattress, the one we have is cheap (around £250 if memory serves), 3 years old and starting to give me all sort of hip aches and pains, well before i thought I was due to get them.

We have an IKEA kingsize slatted bedframe and need a mattress to fit it.

(the current one is a standard sized king was bought before the bedframe and leaves gaps on either size) Because of this, our search has started at IKEA.

Their top of the range mattress is the Hesseng At £600 its pushing our budget, but we both feel that having suffered a rubbish mattress, we should get something that will be of a better quality.

I have no idea if it is actually a good mattress (it has both positive and negative reviews online, if it is worth the money or whether we should invest our money elsewhere.

We are a 13 stone back/side sleeper and a 10 stone side sleeper and I think we prefer the feel of a firm mattress.

The whole world of mdf bases, mattresses and toppers is very alien and given that this represents a sizeable investment for us, I’d be very very grateful for your advice.

Thanks.

Hi Emma,

Thanks for your question

Having looked at the mattress you specified from Ikea, I am unable to provide any comparison from our ranges, that fall within your budget for such a bespoke size.

The only models we could get produced to the 160 cm wide mattress you need for the Ikea base are the Artisan models, these are Naturals fibres with pocket springs and can be made to bespoke sizes.

The details of construction and fillings provided in respect of the Ikea mattress are vague in that they do not advise what levels of each of the fillings are contained within the mattress.

However, if you’re looking for a standard UK sized mattresses we have a number of comparisons in our Origins range to IKEA mattresses. Have a look here at this article on IKEA beds for more detailed analysis of them. There’s also a table below listing what’s inside the IKEA mattress range. Scroll right to get the full details!

The best Origins model to compare to IKEA for the £600 price point would be the Origins 1500 our most popular mattress in the range and a great all rounder.

If you wish to continue with the Ikea base, it will be difficult to find other mattresses to fit within your budget, as that size of mattress is widely sold as it is not a standard UK size.

Lastly please find below a copy of our mattress buying Infographic which should help you in choosing a new mattress.

I am sorry we can not be more positive! Please call us if you need more help.

Kind Regards Gary
