TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Is the Artisan Luxury the mattress for us?

Ru asked
26th October 2016

Hello,
We’ve been trying out quite a few mattresses in the shops and have slept on a few over the recent holidays.
Overall we prefer the soft luxurious feel and usually natural fibers.
The beds we’ve liked the best are the Vi-Spring Devonshire, The Harrison Trebah and the Mammoth Super Soft.
Of these, we’ve only tried the Mammoth on a slatted base, the others have been on sprung divan bases.
We’re both around 5’10” & 12 stone.
My wife has some hip pain and occasionally shoulder pain.
Our current mattress is a 20 year old with a topper.
From your web site, the Artisan Luxury seems the closest match to what we’ve looked at.
I see you compare this to the Devonshire as well.
How well does this work on a slatted base (our preference).
What’s your advice on toppers (assuming we don’t need one to start with).
Also, if we buy a divan base with it, is this also covered by your returns policy?
Any help appreciated.

Hi Ru,

Many thanks for your enquiry.

We note that your preference is for natural fibres in the upholstery, which begs the question why are you looking at the mammoth Super Soft, which is a foam mattress. The description of the Harrison Trebah is limited in the extreme as it does not provide the GSM (grams per square metre) of the upholstery, making any meaningful comparison impossible.

You are correct is your assertion that we compare our Artisan Luxury to the Vi-Spring Devonshire, but this is in feel only and the constructions and overall upholstery in both products is entirely different. The Artisan Luxury is the one product in the Artisan range which has soft upholstery layers making it the softest in that range. This is notwithstanding whatever spring tension you select as defined in the link attached. With your particular body weights, a medium spring tension is required to provide the support you need with the soft upholstery providing the comfort.

The Artisan Luxury can be used on a slatted base provided that you place some form of barrier between the slats and the mattress, usually in the form of this (3-5mm) MDF. This will provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats. All our products, including bases are covered by our 60 day “love it or return it” guarantee.

As far as a topper is concerned, we would advise waiting until you have had your mattress for at least 28 days, before deciding upon whether one is necessary. Please note that toppers are used primarily to provide a softer feel to a mattress and you can only soften a mattress but you cannot firm one up by applying a topper. If you decide to purchase the Artisan Luxury, with this having soft upholstery layers, we think it unlikely, although not impossible, that you will need a topper.
