Can you use electric blanket with latex mattress?

Hi John and Ryan, I commend you on your informative website and your no-nonsense approach to bedding. Consequently, I would like to purchase a pair of your SKS ziplink mattresses. Unfortunately, my budget does not stretch to the Artisan Range so I am looking at your range below £1000. Your Origins Pocket Latex looks good but as my partner and I both weigh around 9st it would appear to be a little too firm for us. We use an electric blanket too and I’m not sure it would be compatable with the latex. I have seen advice that electric underblankets should not be used with memory foam – is it the same with latex?

The obvious choice therefore appears to be the Pocket 1500. Let me know if you have any alternative suggestions. Thanks Rob .

Hi Rob,

Thanks for getting in touch. The reason why you’re advised against electric blankets and memory foam is that the heat can make the foam feel incredibly soft. People then struggle with this, especially if the memory foam is meant to be a firmer feel. It makes it feel like quicksand when heated you see. There’s also some debate on whether or not it damages the foam over time. The jury is still out on that one I’m afraid!

With 100% Natural Latex, you can use an electric blanket as the foam is much more resilient. It will make the latex feel slightly softer as well but not as much as memory foam. However, I would urge a bit of caution as it can make the bed far warmer than you expect as foams do retain more heat than a natural fibre mattress. I’d try it without first and if you are going to use it turn it off about half an hour before you get into bed.

We advise that The Origins Pocket Latex 1500 will feel firmer for individuals with body weights below 11 stone. The Origins Pocket 1500 would be more suitable if you prefer a medium feel.
