Extremely heavy memory foam mattress

Emma asked

Hi
I have an extremely heavy memory phone mattress. I have made enquiries about purchasing a new bed on line, when I asked if the base was solid or sprung slats they advised me it was neither it was just one solid base. Is this a sign of a cheap design? The bed is fairly expensive but I’m not sure if its worth the money with this kind of base?
thanks
Emma

Hi Emma,

The type of base you require is determined by the eventual feel you require from your mattress.

A solid or platform base will make a mattress feel slightly firmer as there is no give in the surface upon which the mattress sits.

Whereas with a sprung base there is give and this can make the mattress feel slightly softer.

Platform bases are by their very nature cheaper than sprung bases, but it really does depend upon what your eventual requirement is.

If your mattress is primarily memory foam, before placing it on a slatted base you should cover the base with thin (3-5mm) MDF or pegboard to prevent the mattress ridging where it rests between the slats.

This will provide a uniform surface for the mattress to sit on and again will make the mattress feel slightly firmer. I hope that this helps.
