A customer asked

Hi

I recently bought a double Harrison mattress but when I measure it its 132.5cm wide and not the 135cm as advertised? I paid a lot of money for it and am concerned. They say it contains 14000 springs that are Revolution springs but reading your site you say only 2,000 springs can fit into a mattress so how do Harrisons achieve this?

I was expecting the mattress to be 135cm wide is there and issue with this mattress or have the mattress sizes in the UK changed?

Looking at finding out more about this one!

Hi Ann,

Thanks for your comment asking about Harrison Spinks mattresses.

I note that you state that you have only recently bought your mattress and as such I would say that the width is within the tolerance for a mattress with natural fillings. There's usually a 2-3cm tolerance in all home furnishings and upholstery.

This isn't always a bad thing with items like mattresses and sofas with fillings. As these settle over the first few months of use meaning that widths of mattresses and sofas can extend ever so slightly over time as they relax. You also need to bear in mind how you are measuring it especially with a tufted mattress vs a quilted flat mattress.

Over the first 3 to 6 months with normal use the mattress from Harrisons will settle and as such will appear to widen eventually ending up at a width nearer the 135cm. This is why all mattress retailers should recommend monthly turning and rotating of all two-sided models to even out this natural settlement. You can find a guide here explaining all about mattress maintenance. It helps even out wear and allow the mattress to fully relax over the first few months.

This applies to all mattresses containing natural fillings.

We are not able to make a mattress which is equivalent to the Harrison one you have because Harrisons do not disclose the specific GSM (grams per square metre) of the upholstery layers and this makes it impossible to make a comparison. We do have a comparison to the Harrison Helmsley Egyptian Cotton mattress to show you the kind of detail you need.

Also Harrisons use their Revolution springs which are springs within springs. We don't manufacture in this way as we prefer to use Calico encased pocket springs. The way that manufacturers get their spring counts over 2,000 springs it to add multiple layers in their mattress. To get to 14,000 springs we would be certain your model is using micro springs, which you can read more on why we also won't use them in our beds.

The closest we have is our Artisan range, these are mattresses with natural fillings and also use calico pocket springs. The Artisan Naturals is our most popular model see below the kind of detail you need to see to make direct comparisons.
