mattress advice please
Hi, I would be very grateful if you could give me your opinion on mattress choice. At present we have a Millbrook 2000 Prelude Ortho double bed (8yrs old) We shall probably be moving house next year and will delegate this to the spare room! We intend to buy a king size this time but have a dilemma. This mattress is EXTREMELY firm and I have always found it to be very comfortable. When away from home I generally end up with an aching back after sleeping on so called ‘firm mattresses’, nothing is like my Millbrook! I am 5’1″ and 8st, my husband is 5’7″ and 12st. I’m concerned that if I buy a medium or medium/firm mattress I’ll find it uncomfortable!! However when I spoke to an assistant in Dreams recently he said that mattresses have changed and even firm ones tend to have a top comfort layer with small springs. I don’t want to end up with a mattress that makes me roll towards my husband, I’d like to have one that stays more or less flat, but yes maybe with a little comfort on top. We are both side sleepers….One final thing is that we would like to have a cotton covered natural fibre filled mattress. Thank you so much for your help!

At the body weights provided we would recommend a Medium spring tension for you both.
The spring tension is where you get the level of support from within the mattress itself.
However, ultimately the decision comes down to your own personal preference in terms of how you prefer the mattress to feel.
Our advice for side sleepers would always be not to opt for anything that is too firm in it’s comfort layers as this can cause pressure point pains in places such as shoulders, hips and knees.
Once the correct spring tension is determined it becomes all about what you want from the top upholstery layers, also referred to as the comfort layers.
