TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Mattress for menopausal woman

Angela asked
31st May 2014

Hello I have been putting off buying a new bed/ mattress for the longest time mainly because of a mixture of option paralysis, confusing and misleading information provided by most high street supliers…. So!

Am I glad I have found your site, it’s like a breath of fresh air and being in the sales environment myself I really appreciate your straight forward talking website and easy to understand yet comprehensive information. I currently have a sealy posture pedic king size mattress on a matching sealy heavy metal sprung frame base which provides storage area below. The bed must be at least 15 years old now but has not had heavy use. Whilst it used to be fine for me, I am finding this mattress too firm now and am suffering a lot more shoulder, hip and back aches and constantly waking up tossing and turning. Please help!

I am 5’4 and weight just under 9st /58kg I am also menopausal!!!

And so get hot at night. I am generally a side sleeper. Please would you be able to reccomend a suitable mattress for me and also is it wise to compliment this with a matching base…. If so I would like something that offers storage either by drawers or room below the bed frame. Having also suffered a pelvic fracture in a recent ski injury I am finding my sleep is even more disrupted and uncomfortable on this bed and am desperate to find a suitable solution and have some honest and straight forward advice. Looking forward to hearing from you. Best wishes Angela >

Hi Angela,

Thanks for your kind words I hope we can provide you with some advice to assist in removing your sleep agony!

I’ll start with the base as this is probably easiest.

We always say if the current base is sound, ie no springs poking out, and its consistent not wobbly or held together with string, then you can always continue using this base. A sprung base will soften slightly the overall feel of a mattress so bare this in mind when searching different models.

The Origins Pocket 1500 is probably the best suited for your weight and for the feel you want. The pocket 1500 is our best selling made in the UK man made and natural fibre mattress. Offering a quality 1500 pocket-spring unit and layers of fillings for a medium overall feeling. Unbeatable value given its quality.

Looking at your current mattress which is really firm I’m assuming a medium tension would best suit you.

It also sounds like you need some deeper initial comfort layers to help with the side sleeping and painful injury.

It constantly wakes you with that throbbing dull ache, in my experience, whereas a more medium deeper sink mattress can cradle you more.

You could also look at the Artisan range as we offer these in a range of tensions which we can advise over the phone, probably a soft spring as the over all comfort layers are of a medium tension in this range.

You also have the medium Fusion range which would of been suitable, but with your concerns over heat I’d avoid foams and go for a more natural mattress.

To summarise a Origins Pocket 1500 would be ideal from the details you’ve given me but please call us on 0161 437 4419 to discuss further and answer any remaining questions.

Kind regards
