Mattress Toppers

John Donaldson asked
11th August 2018

Our main bedroom mattress is about 10 years old.
Would adding a mattress topper to it improve the firmness
and the lifespan of it or do we need to buy a new mattress
due to its age.
Thank you.

Hi John,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.  The purpose of a mattress topper is to soften the upholstery layers.  I don’t know of any way to firm up a mattress.  Having said that, if your base is sprung you could try boarding it to convert it to a platform base.

If you are planning on purchasing a new mattress there are a few things to consider.  Most importantly is in regards to the spring tension.  This is based solely on an individual’s body weight, to give the correct level of support.

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

Then you need to think about how you would like it to feel in the comfort layers.  Do you want a mattress that you sink into, something with a slight sink but not too much or something that is firmer in the comfort layers?  Are you a side sleeper? as this can affect the comfort layers we would recommend.  Anything too firm in the comfort layers, for a side sleeper, can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees. And lastly, do you have any preferences in the fibres used in construction?  Natural fibres are better for anyone who runs hot throughout the night.

Have a look at our Origins range and our Artisan range, this will help with comparisons when looking in showrooms as all of our mattresses have a detailed break down of exactly how much (GSM grams per square meter) of everything that goes into each mattress.  Please bear in mind, any mattress you try in a showroom may have been there quite some time and been tried by a multitude of people of varying body weights.  This will have softened the comfort layers and will not be a true representative of the mattress you will receive.

If you would like any further advice on choosing a mattress that is suitable for yourself please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team on 0161 250 9988 who would be happy to help.  Our office hours are 8 am – 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am – 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards
