PILLOW-TOP V DOUBLE-SIDED
Hi – good site! Intrigued about your pillow-top comments and them not being as long-lasting in their comfort layers as a double-sided mattress. I get that such mattresses tend not to be tufted, which must be a disadvantage, but don’t BOTH top and bottom of a DOUBLE-sided mattress on a bedstead get flattened at the same rate? Your weight’s on both top and bottom every night, so the bottom’s being pressed against the slats; in which case, there’s no advantage in having 2 sides?

Thank you for your question on our website. A pillow-top mattress is a one-sided mattress with a mattress topper stitched on. When the mattress is rotate only your hips are in the same position and the upholstery fibres do not get time to rest. Once the ‘topper’ has compressed the only thing you can do is replace the mattress.
With a two-sided mattress, you can turn the mattress north to south and east to west which means by alternating these over 4 turnings you are using all four sleep positions which helps to even out the natural settlement. When you are sleeping on one side of the mattress you are essentially ironing the underside. If you add a separate mattress topper to replicate the feel of a pillowtop mattress, this will prolong the lifespan of the mattress as well as provide additional comfort as it will be this that is taking the impact of your sleeping and moving around on the mattress instead of the comfort layers. Once this has compressed you can replace the mattress topper.
