TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Please can you help me choose from these mattresses?

Hi. I weigh 9st and spent many years on the wrong orthopedic mattress (sold as “luxury quality”), unfortunately resulting in shoulder and hip stiffness. More recently I’ve been using a mattress with unknown tension and softness, but it’s very uncomfortable. My hip hurts, my spine is never straight as my hip and shoulder cant sink into the mattress, my shoulder is crushed and uncomfortable. I really need a mattress which allows my body weight to sink in on the shoulder/hip, whilst supporting the spine at the waist iyswim. Can you tell me please how these 3 x John Ryan mattresses would feel for me in king size? I have read through about them on the website and I don’t really need to know about the materials as it’s the comparative feel I’m more interested to know. Origins Comfort (as it has soft comfort rating?), Origins Pocket 1500, John Ryan Express. Also, it is outside my budget, but how does the Grade C Artisan Luxury mattress compare feel wise with the previous 3?
Lastly have you got any graded continental drawer king size bases available? There’s no option to choose drawer type on the webpage. Many thanks

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for contacting us regarding a new mattress.

It was of the opinion many years ago that if you had a bad back that you required a firmer level of comfort and support but this is not the case as it really is about receiving the correct level of support and the correct level of comfort.  Support is dictated by body weight and height and comfort is really dictated by sleeping positions.   A side sleeper can have either soft or medium levels of comfort, a back sleeper would require more medium to keep their spine aligned and a front sleeper would require something a little firmer so that their tummy does not sink in which would cause an unnatural arch in their back leading to back ache etc.

As you do not require to know what each mattress contains with regard to upholstery layers and springs, I can confirm that at your body weight you do require a mattress with a medium level of support and this would be the case no matter which mattress you choose.

The Origins Comfort 1000 although we state this as being a soft mattress, it is the softest mattress that we make within the Origins Range but is actually soft to medium from a comfort point of view.   The Origins Pocket 1500 has a definite overall medium level of comfort, so not too soft nor too firm and the John Ryan Express mattress can be made with either a medium level of comfort or a firm level of comfort.

The Artisan Luxury contains 100% natural fibres together with calico encased pocket springs which is the best spring unit you can use inside a mattress as again they are very breathable and is the softest mattress that we make within the Artisan Range.   It is softer in feel to that of the Origins Pocket 1500 and the John Ryan Express and is a little softer than the Origins Comfort 1000.

The mattresses contained within our Clearance are those which have been returned to us inside the return guarantee period and have been discounted accordingly.   The Artisan Luxury mattress which we have within that range, does have a soft spring tension and so would not be supportive enough for you.
