Relyon Braemar slatted base, should I board with acrylic or MDF?

Karen asked
31st July 2015

I have bought a Relyon Braemar king size mattress for my 19 yr old son and he wanted a bedframe rather than divan. The bedframe we purchased has sprung slats which have 3 inch gaps. I had thought of putting 3 mm acrylic sheeting on top to stop the mattress getting forced into the gaps but reading above should I be using mdf and should I put a soft layer of something between it and the mattress too? Sounds like it would have been simpler to buy the divan and get a headboard!
Many thanks for any help. Karen

Hi Karen,

Thanks for your question.

I am so pleased that you have decided to place some form of barrier between the slats and your mattress and would suggest 3mm MDF or similar thickness peg board.

The latter of these has holes enabling the mattress to breathe, although if it is a quality mattress, it will breathe even on the MDF.

This protective barrier will make the mattress feel slightly firmer than it would without such a barrier.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Mike.
