Replacing a Sealy Pillowtop mattress that has failed

Httk asked
12th May 2016

We are looking to replace our five years old mattress. Current mattress is sealy zip and link pocket collection gold 1400 posturepedic Sophia. It need to be zip and link due to size to turn the mattress on staircase. I am 5ft and 67kg and my husband is 5ft11 and 90kg. We have a divan base Super King base not slatted. We both are side sleeper but it is a not a good posture to sleep in and I been told to sleep on my back more as my shoulder is curving in. What do you suggest? Also is the mattress all same thickness. Our current mattress has topper fixed to the mattress and it is not removable. As you can imagine the topper probably is ‘dented’ badly through these few years of laying on top but couldn’t replace it. Looking forward to hear from you.

Hi Httk,

Thanks for your question.

Sorry to hear you’re struggling with your shoulder.

It sounds like you’ve been struck by the pillow top failure issue we write so frequently about. Pillow tops can look and feel absolutely fantastic at first, but once they settle or dip that’s it is game over for the bed as you can do nothing to salvage the product. We have an article here all about them.

Ideally, we would need a little bit more information such as what you liked and disliked about the Sophia and what tension/feel preference you both have.

Side sleepers generally need to avoid anything too firm in the top layers as this will only cause pressure point pains in places such as shoulders, hips and knees. Back sleepers are less restricted.

Looking at your weights I think a better option would be a Zip and Link Origins Pocket 1500 mattress, which is more a medium feel. This will allow you to sink slightly more and this model is two sided. You can fully turn it giving you the longest life out of your mattress. If you later down the line wanted to add a topper you could and again this could then be turned.

If you wanted natural fillings to give a cool sleep surface then have a look at our Artisan Naturals. This is again a traditional pocket sprung mattress with 85% natural fillings; Those fillings are ideal where there are heat issues during sleep.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
