Sagging mattress and squeaking bed frame?

I have an expensive brass bed frame which is about 12 years old purchased fromAnd So To Bed. I have a visprung divan and mattress on top, both of latter 3 years old. My bed is now squeaking and the mattress is sagging so I am not at all comfortable. I suspect the issue is with the bed frame as opposed to the divan and mattress. What do you recommend I do?

Hi Jaki,

Thanks for your comment, we feel your pain with a squeaky sagging mattress, not ideal is it!

However, help is at hand with a few top tips when using an antique bed base or bed frame to stop squeaks and prevent sagging. The issue with bed frames, especially slatted ones or antique frames is that they simply aren't created with high-end heavy luxury mattresses in mind. More often than not they use screws or joints that over time work loose, hence the squeaking or they have a base which uses slats or rungs to support the mattress. Let's have a look at each of these and provide some tips to help you resolve this problem.

The first issue is with the squeaky bed bases. The best way to avoid squeaking bases is to avoid metal frames or bases which you have to self assemble with screws or wing nuts as over time these nearly always work loose. In some models there maybe hundreds of these depending on the complexity so trying to find the 'squeaky' screw can be like a needle in a haystack. The best way to avoid this is to put small rubber washers onto each of the screws or wing nuts when you assemble it. This way even if they work slightly loose there is no metal on metal causing the squeak. We know this is a pain if you've already got your bed assembled.

For people who are considering a bed frame or antique base you would be better off with a sprung divan which provides the necessary support and has no squeaking metal parts!

Sagging beds due to bed frames or antique bases: More often than not we find antique bed frames you find the support that the mattress sits on is slatted or based on rungs. The niggle with this is that it doesn't truly support the mattress like a divan base, which is a consistent flat surface with no pesky gaps! The best way to address slatted bases is to board over them, to begin with, which stops mattresses sagging and dipping between the gaps. There's no way that a Vi-spring should be sagging after 3 years, so maybe get in touch with them if you think its faulty.

If you have a divan base there is no possibility of the sagging and dipping occurring due to the gaps between slats. This is because the divan is a consistent flat surface allow the mattress to respond to you the sleeper rather than gaps between slats.

We have a really detailed guide on how to prevent slatted mattress bases and bed frames from damaging your mattress here. It's relatively simple and for a couple of pounds can help save or protect your mattress from a slatted base.

We hope that helps answer your query Jaki and you can fix your bed issue. If you have any other questions or after speaking to Vispring need to replace your mattress, please get in touch with us on 0161 437 4419 or info@localhost were we can advise.

All the best
