Zip and link mattress for weight difference?

Ola asked
26th September 2012

Hi John Ryan I have been looking at your site for a few months now and would like some advice please. I am 9 1/2 stone 5’4″, my husband is 18st 6’1″. Our current bed is a sealy 726 latex KS divan approx 10 years old and now very uncomfortable. I really notice the weight difference (roll together) and feel the springs. Would a zip link be a better option due to weight difference?

We like medium/firm but really comfy (I like to sink into the bed!) Thats why we originally went for latex but now have added a memory foam topper on bed too as it has lost its softness/comfort. The divan base is a sprung base. Would we need a new base too?

Many thanks .

Hi Ola,

Thank you for your question.

Logic dictates that it will be practically impossible for you to find a mattress that will be right for two completely differing bodyweights such as yours.

You both need completely different levels of support!

As you rightly point out, a zip and link is one solution, whereby each mattress can be tailored to your precise bodyweight or alternatively, a one piece mattress with dual spring tensions.

However, each of these options carry some pros and cons: Ziplinks do carry a price premium mainly due to the additional labour involved – it takes nearly twice as long to manufacture a ziplink mattress than it does to manufacture a one piece mattress.

As an added further downside Kingsize ziplinks are considerably more expensive by comparison to Superking Ziplinks as the labour element is practically the same to manufacture.

One piece dual spring mattresses can usually be made either one half soft and one half medium or one half medium and one half firm.

In your case, your requirements would be a medium spring tension for you and a firm spring tension for your husband as this will give you both the correct support.

You do not mention budget, so I am going to give you two alternatives: The first is our Origins Latex on a Ziplink construction, 1500 springs for yourself and 2000 springs for your husband.

However, because it is so well upholstered (8cm of upholstery above the spring unit) you at nearly 10st will not even be able to get through the upholstery layers and will be using these as both support and comfort.   However, your husband will be gaining correct support and ideal comfort.

The second suggestion is to opt for the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 .

Unlike the model above, the actual spring units can be tailored to suit both your individual bodyweights and the more than generous upholstery at just short of 4000 gsm will give you the comfort.

Don’t underestimate the importance of getting this right.  You are both on the extremes of average and you both will have certain requirements completely different from each other.

Both mattresses recommended can be placed on to your existing sprung divan base.  In fact our Artisan range of mattresses are paired with a sprung divan base which will give the mattress its definite medium feel.   The Origins Pocket Latex 1500 is normally paired with a solid divan base but can go onto the sprung divan base.  All it will do is soften the mattress tension slightly.

I hope the above is of assistance to you, but please telephone our office for further information and advice on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie.
