A customer asked

hi john and ryan im going to buy a mattress from you shortly and have more or less decided on between two - the artisan luxury and the artisan bespoke 004. My question is one has less springs and more upholstery and the other has less upholstery and more springs. But which is best?!

I wanted a single and im about 11 stone and prefer soft - i will be using toppers (love them). Also id like to keep my base with mdf but have you brought out the mattress pad yet and how much (ie is it as cheap to get new base). Amazing informative site by the way.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for your question.

We tend to describe any particular mattress as the "best" as it's very subjective; It is very much all about what you want from the mattress.

Every pocket sprung mattress has 2 elements to it; You have the spring tension determined by body weight and then the fillings that sit atop those springs acting as the comfort layer.

At your body weight we would match you with a Medium spring tension to get the right support;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

From you disclosure that you prefer a soft feel this would narrow it down to the Artisan Luxury. This model is the softest one that we retail and gives that luxurious sink in sensation in the top layer.

The Artisan Bespoke 004 is very much a true medium feeling model in the top layers providing a slight sink in sensation into the top layer but not too much.

Please see below for the full breakdown of both models;

John Ryan By Design Artisan Luxury Vi-Spring Devonshire

3 1200gsm Pure Horsehair NA
4 500gsm Pure Wool NA
5 1200gsm Pure Horsetail NA
6 500gsm Pure Wool 300gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton

Total GSM 4600gsm 2600gsm

We'd always advise not to use a topper straight away but rather a Mattress Protector. If after 4-6 weeks you're finding the mattress too firm as this will introduce an additional comfort layer.
