Hi Four weeks ago I bought a Waterlattex Vision Latex Mattress. For the past two weeks I have suffered from debilitating sciatica and I'm convinced it's to do with the mattress being too firm, although I moved house and was carrying heavy boxes during this time. I weigh 8st 9lbs and sleep in my back and side. The mattress makes me feel pressure in my hips and upper back. I bought a John Lewis feather mattress topper but it has done nothing to soften the bed. I'm in constant pain with my back and leg. Is there a topper that you would recommend or should I just give up and get another mattress?

Hi Jen.

Unfortunately the mattress you have is on the firmer side for your light bodyweight, however, I can't see that it is the main reason for your current discomfort.  It could be just coincidental with your moving etc. only time will tell for certain.

The mattress you have despite it's name, is only about 20% latex, unlike our Fusion range which is 100% natural latex, with the rest being made up of polymer foam of one sort or another.  If we take this as the support element which I would agree is slightly too much for your actual requirements, we have to look at ways to add the additional comfort element you require which unfortunately is not contained within the actual mattress.

Feather toppers can be seen as relatively supportive particularly if used directly on top of the mattress and beneath your bottom sheet.  I would be inclined to encase the topper within a duvet cover (on top of your bottom sheet) and you sleep directly on this.  Feathers do have the tendency to compress / compact under weight and the opportunity to shake it out each morning will be more beneficial to you.  I don't think you need to change your mattress, just experiment with toppers - they always come in use so it is not an extra expense.

If you have a fibre filled duvet try sleeping on that for a night or so to see if that makes a difference to your sleeping comfort.

Hope this helps and please let us know how you get on and if necessary we can look at further options.  Please call the office on 0161 437 4419 between 8 am and 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am and 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela
