What should I use to cover a memory foam mattress with?

A customer asked

I have a question about what is acceptable to put on top of a memory foam mattress - if a significant depth mattress protector is used, does it insulate body heat and prevent the memory foam from moulding to the body's contours?

A related question would be why it is inadvisable to use an electric blanket on top of a memory foam mattress. Thanks for any advice. >

Hi Colin,

Memory foam is the most heat retentive of all mattress materials.

This is because it relies on heat to mould to the sleeper.

In my experience even a really thick protector won't stop the heat issue much, even if it does it would then impact the progressive comfort of the mattress; a catch 22!

Advise that it is inadvisable to use an electric blanket has come from a number of customer complaints on memory foam.

Firstly that it can soften the memory foam too much when people have used them in the past they have complained about a really soft feeling.

Secondly there is also debate about whether sudden fluctuations in the temperature of memory foam, from say an electric blanket which is in direct contact with the foam, so quickly can degrade the life span of the foam.

I'd just bare this in mind.

Kind Regards Gary
