Tesco Silentnight mattress replacement

A customer asked

Firstly, thanks for such a fantastic site !

We're looking to buy a new king size bed to replace a destroyed 4 year old "Tesco Direct's top of the range Miracoil" mattress with collapsed sides - we're lying on pretty much bare metal now, and a week or so ago I had to grab my pliers to cut off a spring that had come through the surface. We're probably looking more for "ultra firm" if possible - we both have bad backs, I'm 18 stone, and my wife's just over 13 stone. I also like to sleep on my front at times, which may also influence any advice. To make things a little more awkward, I "run hot", and can sweat a lot in bed, but my wife's often cold - so the electric blanket sees a fair amount of use (it also helps our backs). We have a metal bed frame with slats - which probably needs more slats, or some creative work with MDF / plywood to provide a better base. The dog likes to sleep under the bed, so replacing it with a divan base might not be a popular option !

Suggestions / recommendations would be most welcome, the budget possibly up to the Artisan Naturals :-}

Hi Colin,

Thank you for your question.

Firstly, can I say that despite the assertion by the manufacturer that your current mattress has revolutionary “miracoil springs” to provide support, it is evident from your experience that there is little or insufficient support for you in the mattress.

Also, it would appear from what you say regarding the recent situation involving your pliers that, the levels of upholstery between the springs and the outer cover are insufficient to prevent the springs poking through and I would also suggest not sufficient to provide any proper comfort or support.

There are no specific details available to confirm the amount of upholstery provided and so I cannot compare this to any of our mattresses.

We do not have any “ultra firm” mattresses, however, rather than the Artisan Naturals, I would suggest you look at the Artisan Bespoke, which has a high degree of upholstery providing firm, yet supportive layers suitable for you both.

Aside from being able to provide a split tension, medium and firm, to suit both your body weights, our mattresses have firmer springs at the sides to avoid the roll off feeling.

If placing this mattress on a slatted base, the slats need to be no more than 3 inches apart.   If they are further apart, the placing of some MDF board on the base will prevent the mattress sinking into the gaps and avoid any undue dipping.

The Kingsize Artisan Bespoke retails at £1850.00 and has 5100 GSM of natural upholstery and the specific breakdown for each element is provided on our site.

I can see that your were looking at a budget up to the cost of an Artisan Naturals, which retails at £1235, perhaps, you could call the office to discuss your requirements further at which point you can advise if there is any flexibility in your budget.

I trust that this assists and look forward to speaking to you very soon.  Please call our Office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie

Kind regards Mike.
