Cleaning Products to Tackle a Sweat-Stained Mattress

Removing sweat stains from your mattress will require a few household cleaning products and items. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Gentle detergent: You’ll need a mild cleaning agent to help break down and lift away sweat stains without damaging the mattress fabric or materials. Washing up liquid or laundry detergent that’s diluted with water are both good options. Avoid using harsh chemicals or bleach, as these can damage your mattress’s fibres and cause discolouration.
  • White vinegar: White vinegar is a natural deodoriser and can help to eliminate any lingering odours from sweat stains. It also has antimicrobial properties that can help to kill bacteria and prevent mould growth. You can mix equal parts white vinegar and water into a spray bottle and use it to “mist” the affected area.
  • Spray bottle: The aforementioned spray bottle will make it easy to apply any cleaning solution evenly over the sweat stains.
  • Clean white cloth: You’ll need a soft, absorbent cloth to blot away excess moisture from the stain. Choose a clean, white cloth to avoid transferring any colour onto the mattress.
  • Vacuum cleaner: A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment is helpful for removing any dust or debris that may have accumulated on the mattress. Use the attachment to gently vacuum the mattress surface before and after cleaning.

How to Remove Sweat Stains From a Mattress

Removing sweat stains from a mattress usually requires the following process:

  1. Start by removing all bedding, including the mattress protector (if you have one), and vacuum the mattress surface with the upholstery attachment to remove any dust and dirt.
  2. Mix a small amount of laundry detergent with water to create a mild cleaning solution. Avoid using too much detergent, as this can leave behind residue that may damage the mattress fabric and cause discolouration over time.
  3. Dip a clean white cloth in the solution and wring it out until it’s damp, but not dripping. You may wish to wear protective gloves when doing so to avoid any skin irritation!
  4. Using the damp cloth, gently blot the sweat stains, being careful not to saturate the mattress. Start at the edges of the stain and work your way inwards to prevent spreading the stain further. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the stain, as this can damage the mattress fibres.
  5. Once you’ve blotted the stain, mist the area with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. This will help to neutralise any remaining odours and kill bacteria.
  6. With another clean white cloth, blot the affected area again to remove any excess vinegar solution. This helps to ensure that the mattress is completely clean and free of solution.
  7. Allow the mattress to air dry completely. You could try speeding up the drying process by opening windows or using a fan to improve the air circulation. This is an important step, as the mattress must be completely dry before you replace any bedding to prevent mould or mildew growth.
  8. Once the mattress is dry, vacuum the surface again. This helps to ensure that the mattress is completely clean and free of any remaining dirt or dust.

If the stain persists, then we recommend repeating the above process until it fades away completely. Some stains may require multiple cleaning sessions to fully remove them.

Preventing Sweat Stains on a Mattress

Keeping a clean and stain-free mattress needn’t be a challenging task. By following some simple tips, you can help to prevent these stains and keep your mattress in pristine condition!

Use a Mattress Protector or Waterproof Cover
Mattress protectors and waterproof covers can be an effective way to protect your mattress from sweat stains. These covers can help to prevent any moisture from coming into contact with it, and they can also be easily removed and washed. Just make sure to choose a cover that fits your mattress properly to ensure maximum protection!

Wash Your Bedding Regularly
Washing your bedding regularly is an important part of preventing sweat stains on your mattress. Over time, sweat and oils from your body can transfer onto your sheets and pillowcases, which can then end up on your mattress. To avoid any stains forming, you’ll want to wash your bedding at least once a week to prevent any buildup of sweat or oils.

Use Breathable, Moisture-Wicking Bedding & Pyjamas
Bedding and pyjamas made from fabrics like cotton or bamboo can help to prevent excess sweating during the night and keep you cool and dry. These materials allow moisture such as sweat to reach the outside layers of the fabric, allowing it to evaporate more easily. Try to avoid using synthetic materials, as these can trap heat and moisture and increase the chances of you sweating.

Keep Your Bedroom at a Comfortable Temperature & Humidity Level
Managing the temperature and humidity of your bedroom can significantly help to prevent excessive sweating during the night, especially if you’re a hot sleeper. Ideally, you want to keep the temperature between 15 to 19 degrees Celsius and the humidity level between 30 to 50%. You can use a fan or air conditioning unit to help better regulate the temperature of your room, and a dehumidifier to manage the moisture in the air.
