Should I put a mattress on an old sprung base?

A customer asked

I have just bought an old arts and crafts bed frame with original spring base that is in fantastic condition.

Is there a mattress out there that will sit on springs (there isn't a mesh above) that is both comfortable and will not be damaged by the sprung base >

Hi Karen,

Thank you for your inquiry.

There really should not be any problem using whatever mattress you prefer. What I would say though, is to provide an insulating barrier yourself - such as a duvet in order to protect your mattress from the springs. Read this post on mattresses for slatted bases - the theory still applies.

Secondly, these kind of frames were usually kept for a considerable amount of time. And so, it is advisable to check the entire spring surface to see if any of the springs have lost some of the support qualities. Knowing if there are any 'weak areas' will enable you to make tweaks to compensate. Simple to do - just lay your duvet on top of the base and see if you can feel any variances on the unit. These will usually be in the sleep areas. If you can feel support differences you will have to use something quite supportive as the insulating layer such as a section of carpet to equal out the load. This is not ideal but a necessary compromise when you are using a bedframe such as yours.

We have two different ranges of pocket sprung mattresses. The Origins Range is the Synthetic fibre range and The Artisan range is the natural fibre range.

The Origins Pocket 1500 is a fantastic all round medium feel mattress. The Origins Pocket range should be the most you pay for a polyester based mattress. If this falls within your maximum budget you can rest assured that there is not much more out there that compares.

John Ryan By Design Origins 1500
1 300gsm Wool
2 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
3 500gsm Polyester Pad
4 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
5 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

The Artisan Naturals is our most popular, unbeatable model with 85% natural fibres. Containing a huge GSM of fillings, including wool and mohair, on a Calico Pocket spring unit. This medium feel hand crafted mattress is where we stake our reputation as ‘The Mattress Specialists’. This is priced particularly low in comparison to more established brands in order for us to set the bar in comparing branded mattresses with similar components. If this is in the region of your maximum budget then you will be getting the best mattress you can buy. The closest comparison we can make to the Naturals is the Vi Spring Regal Superb;
