A customer asked

Hi I am about to purchase a bed i really like with sprung slats 8cm apart and want a pocket sprung mattress now as the slats are more than 3 " apart if i put some MDF ontop of the slats would this work as a solution?

Hi John,

Thanks for your question.

As the gaps are bigger than 3" we would definitely advise to board the base to protect from indentation and damage.

There is no set way to do this; Some people prefer to board the whole base whereas others prefer to board it in halves.

However, if the base has sprung slats with a central bar running down the middle, it can cause a ridge down the middle of the mattress. In this instance we'd advise to board the entire base.

Some people, where they think there may be an issue with mould for example, are reluctant to do this but you could purchase some peg board with holes in to allow a bit more ventilation.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
