Changing an Ikea Sultan mattress

A customer asked

Hi there, my wife and I have been searching for a mattress for a while. We currently sleep on two Ikea Sultan mattresses (can't see which type precisely, but they are very hard), which we're actually quite happy with. We're moving and are getting a new bed (1800 x 2000) for which we are looking for a zip & link mattress so that my wife doesn't wake up if I move and vice versa. The large size is mainly as I'm quite tall (6'3) - not particularly heavy, though, at 78kg. My wife is shorter at 5'8 and somewhat lighter.
We've been looking around for mattresses for the new bed, and quite liked two so far: The "top dog" mattress by Loaf and the Enchantment springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring Mattress (firm) by Dreams, but the latter wasn't available as a zip&link, and Loaf felt more like a designer shop rather than a good place for buying a mattress, so we ended up here instead.
Is the top dog mattress any good, or do you have something similar to recommend from your selection that we should consider instead, i.e. something quite hard that ventilates well and keeps cool at night? I saw for instance that you had a return on a firm/firm Artisan Bespoke 002 Zip & Link right now - would that be a good choice in our case?
Thanks!

Hi Moritz,

Thank you fror your question.

I am unable to provide an opinion as to the quality or performance of the "top dog" mattress as there are no specific details published with regard to the upholstery layers in terms of GSM (grams per square metre). The same applies to the Dreams model. In addition, on viewing the images of the top dog provided, it would appear that the springs are pocketed in a spun bond fabric and not calico, which most high end manufacturers use.

The Artisan Bespoke 002 mattress that you have been looking at actually has 100% natural fillings and a medium comfort layer (those are all the fillings which are on top of the mattress that give you the comfort).   As you require a firm mattress, I would suggest looking at the Artisan Bespoke.  This mattress again has 100% natural fillings but with a firm comfort layer.   However I would also suggest a medium spring tension as the firm spring would not give you the correct support.

The springs in a mattress are there to give you that support and that support is dictated by your body weight.   You are not heavy enough to move a firm spring and therefore would not be properly supported.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

I hope the above is of assistance to you but please do not hesitate to contact our office for further information and advice on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
