Mattress rotating causing pain

Mr S Fitton

I have a new pocket sprung mattress which has predominately foam layers for comfort but is not classed as memory foam
I have fitted a topper which is a dual layer fabric one
I am turning it around about once every 2- 4 weeks but have noticed that it gives me backache one way round but not so much the other way round
As turning is supposed to equalise the wear could you please explain why this is happening
Also if i only use it the most comfortable way round will it indent too much and too quickly
I am six feet tall and weigh 66 kilogrammes and have had back issues in the past
Many Thanks Mr S Fitton

Hi Mr S Fitton,

Thanks for your question.

This is quite an unusual problem.

It sounds like you have a one sided mattress, that has softer foam layers on top of reflex support foam. Reflex foam is super firm and is used in foam mattress construction. The reason why these mattresses are usually one sided is that the layers soften from the reflex foam upwards. We detail the construction method here to help people understand why most foam and memory foam mattresses are one sided. If you then flip it over you then crush the softer foams and would be left sleeping on firm reflex foam. We think this may be happening in your case.

You can check if your mattress is one-sided as there is usually a 'No turn' label or logo on the label. If not you can google the mattress name and see if the listing lists it as 'no turn''.

Please get back in touch on 0161 437 4419 if this is not the case, but it sounds like you're turning a no turn mattress and sleeping on hard reflex foam.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
