Which John Ryan mattress would be best for us?

A customer asked

We're looking for a new mattress, and have a top budget of about £600. We have a king size wooden slatted bed frame, and will put hardboard on top of the slats ready for the new mattress. I am 5'4 and 57kg, and my husband is 5'10 and 80kg, and we both sleep quite hot. Which mattress would you recommend for us? I was thinking the Origins Pocket 1500, but wasn't sure if the hardboard/slats combination would make it too firm. I am predominantly a side/front sleeper, and my husband a side/back sleeper. Thanks.

Good Morning,

Thank you for your question.

At those body weights, you would both comfortably fall onto a Medium spring tension; The spring you need in the mattress is solely determined by your body weight.

The Origins Pocket 1500 mattress is the true medium feeling mattress in its top comfort layers providing a true medium support.

We would advise placing sheets of MDF over a slatted base only if the gaps between them are bigger than 3". This is sole because the mattress will attempt to settle in those gaps and cause indentation and damage.

If the slats are solid then it will always firm up the feel of the mattress. If the slats are sprung then they give a bit more flex and will soften the feel of the mattress slightly.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries then please don't hesitate to contact me on 0161 413 2864.

Kind Regards, Lee.
