Dunlopillo latex mattress sagging: what's the fix?

Geraint James

Hello,

We currently have a Dunlopillo Latex bed with a split base. I've had another flare up of spinal issues and this mattress is making that worse again and that is partly because over time this non-turn mattress is slumping on the edge (it's worse because that is where i normally sleep, on the very edge) I am not small at around 16 stone, but I do now find a noticeable difference between my part of the bed and the rest of it. Shoulder/neck issues made the non-turning part of this mattress more attractive, but it's not really holding up over time (this is probably about 5 years old now)

I've been attracted to trying a zip and link and contracted you before, but there have been so many failures in terms of mattresses that I no doubt that anything will make a difference. We seem to have pretty much all the options available, but hope persists!

A couple of new questions:

1) If we tried Z&L and found it better, now does turning work with them and,in the even longer term, what options would there be to just replace one side of the mattress? Do you actually offer that option?

2) I was looking at your B grade options. I've never considered buying returned furniture before, could you give me some more information about this option?

Thanks

Hi Geraint,

Thanks for your comment about your sagging Dunlopillo mattress. The issue with one sided mattresses like you have discovered is they can sag and dip rather quickly.

As you can't turn them there is no way to even out this settlement once it happens. All the wear happens on one side. Apart from adding additional latex toppers to reduce this there's nothing you can do once the sagging or dip has occurred I'm afraid.

You could get in touch with Dunlopillo about getting an inspector if it is still in guarantee to come and check the mattress? It may have failed though in all likelihood at 16 stone and being an edge sleeper it would probably be found as natural settlement for a one-sided mattress.

Avoiding mattress settlement and dips

The best bet to avoid this kind of mattress settlement is to choose a 2 sided mattress and turn it over monthly plus rotation every 2 months of so. That way all the wear is dispersed on all parts of the mattress preventing or drastically reducing dips. With a zip and link. At 16 stone you're on the cusp of a 1.6 gauge firm spring. You can find out more on why spring tensions are chosen based on your weight in the video guide below.

Can one half of a zip and link mattress be replaced?

Unfortunately no you would need to replace both. This is because zip and links are made as a pair and then the zips are perfectly matched. If you were to replace on side the likelihood of matching the zips to a previous bed, that will have already settled naturally would be almost impossible. However, if you're turning both sides of the mattress then you shouldn't need to replace one half before the other, especially if you're swapping both sides over each month when you turn.

Zip and links do make it much easier to turn mattresses and also they have less issues with central settlement - the part of the mattress that most people don't sleep in. In one piece mattresses, especially super kingsize, this can occur as people don't sleep there so a ridge can develop over years. This doesn't happen with a zip and link as both sides can be used and you have more options for turning.
