A customer asked

We have a slatted bed,and a medium mattress which is only 3 years old and has dipped in places. My husband is 15 stone and I am 9 stone. What firmness should we get I am a light sleeper and he wakes me up when he rolls over.

Hi there,

Mattresses which are double sided require turning and rotating on a regular basis to avoid the possibility of over settlement.

In addition, when placing a mattress on a slatted base, we would also suggest that some form of barrier, usually in the form of (3-5mm) MDF should be placed over the slats to avoid ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

This also has another advantage, as most slatted bases have a central ridge which is either raised or dippped and by placing the MDF over the base, you provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit.

Because of your particular weight differential I would suggest a split spring tension, soft for you and medium for your husband.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Additionally, to reduce the possibility of disturbance when your husband moves, it may be best to opt for a zip and link set of mattresses. We only make zip and link mattresses in king size and above and the split tension required is only available from us in our Artisan range.

Please view these products on our site and then call our office on 0161 437 4419 for more specific advice as to suitability, prior to placing an order.

Kind Regards Gary
