What's the best mattress for us?

A customer asked

Hello,
My husband and I are looking for a mattress and would like your recommendations of what is best to ensure a good night sleep. Below are our details.
Mattress:
- 200cm x 180cm mattress non-zip
- For easier handling we are open to a zip mattress however have some concerns: can one feel the gap even with a topper on and we tend to both sleep towards the center effectively lying on the edge of the mattresses so I am concerned that overtime this could damage the edge of the mattresses.
Mattress Topper: With the size of the mattress we want there is only one topper that John Ryan offers that will fit a 200cm x 180cm mattress. It’s my understanding that toppers are important to use for added comfort and should be selected to compliment the particular mattress one chooses so it’s surprising that John Ryan has few choices to select from. Why is this the case?
Mattress Recommendations:
Weight & Height:
Andrew - 185 lbs & 6 feet tall
Eleanor - 98 lbs & 5 ft tall
Base:
It’s our understanding that not only is it important to purchase the correct mattress but to also purchase the correct base as it plays a role in the comfort of your entire sleep experience. Which option would be best? Bonnel Coil or Pocket Sprung? Also, will having drawers vs. no drawers effect the quality of the base?
Back Issues:
I have mild sciatica and have upper neck pain on my right side. My husband has no back issues.
We did the usual quick few minute test lying on our backs and sides testing some Vi Spring models. For what one can tell from a short test, we both liked the Regal Superb medium, we also liked the Heaven mattress topper. I found the Devonshire too soft as did my much heavier husband. What mattress, base, topper and support stiffnesses would you recommend and why?
We most likely will not be able to take advantage of your 30-day guarantee as the items will be shipped to Spain so it’s important that we are able to purchase the right bed for my husband and myself.
Thank you for your help.
Regards,
Eleanor

Hello Eleanor,

I would like to answer your queries in the order that the appear above.

The size of mattress you are referring to is super king size, and whilst I appreciate your initial requirement of non-zip, I must advise that for the purposes of turning, rotating and access a zip and link option are more regularly appropriate. In terms of the edge support, there are slightly firmer springs in the edges of the individual mattresses to prevent dipping. Whilst you may think that this would make the central join area feel firmer, it tends not to and we have never had any returned zip and link mattresses citing this as a reason for such return. As far as feeling the zips are concerned, similar to the firmer springs, we have not had any returns because they could be felt or make the bed uncomfortable. If a reasonably padded mattress protector is used, this will further eliminate any issue in respect of feeling the zip.

As far as the application of a topper is concerned, whilst John has been quite forceful in his insistence that you should always look to apply one if not two to obtain the optimum feel. This is his own personal preference and our normal advice is to use any new mattress for at least 14 days before deciding upon whether a topper is required, as it may turn out to be a unnecessary expense. Whilst we do supply toppers in our Contemporary range (Latex & Hybrid Foam), these are mainly supplied to compliment the mattresses in those ranges. The development and creation of naturally filled toppers is a more dedicated field and although we do not manufacture any at present, it does not mean that we won't develop some in the future.

With your particular body weights, I would suggest that you look at a split tension mattress, which can be provided in a one piece or zip and link set in the size you are looking for. The ideal split in terms of your body weights is soft for you and medium for your husband. However, if you actually prefer a firmer feel yourself, then you could opt for a medium tension across the whole of the mattress. Having said that, with your sciatica and neck issues, I would be reluctant to advise you to go too firm, as this will only aggravate the situation.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

As for the springs used in a base, bonnel coil or pocket springs, are concerned, this is less important in the base than it is in a mattress. Effectively a sprung base will give that additional sink to any mattress, although the pocket sprung bases are more expensive. The sprung area of our bases is in the top 6 inches leaving another 7 inches below to accommodate the drawers. The same level of springing would be applied even if you did not opt for drawers, so the drawers have no effect on the quality and effectiveness of the base.

Some of our Artisan range are similar in feel to some Vi-Spring models and the two models in this range, which provide a similar feel to the Regal Superb are the Artisan Naturals and the Artisan Bespoke 004. The first of these mattresses contains 85% natural upholstery, whilst the second has 100% natural upholstery and has a very slightly softer feel.

To discuss the suitability of our products please give the office a call on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards,
Amy.
