New base or slats for Vispring Bedstead Realm Mattress?

We have a Vispring Bedstead Realm Mattress that we initially ordered in medium tension but switched to soft under the Vispring Comfort Promise. We are both still waking with back pain and have come to the conclusion it must be to do with the bed base.
We have a wooden framed base that is 150 x 200cm that has solid 9cm wide x 3.5cm tall pine slats spaced 7.5cm apart. I have tried placing a 1cm MDF board on top of the slats which helped slightly but not a lot.
I am 5 foot 10 inches (178cm) weighing 12 stone 6 (79kg) and my wife is 5 foot 3 inches (164cm) weighing 9 stone 7 pounds (60kg).
I would be grateful if you could advise whether we need to buy a more suitable set of slats or a new divan base?

Gosh, that must be so frustrating to have bought such a high-quality mattress, such as a vispring and are still finding it uncomfortable.
It could be the slatted based which would give the mattress a firmer feel than a sprung edge divan. I say could, because there is still the possibility that there's something not quite right with the mattress for you and your partner's requirements. However, we have a don't throw the baby out with the bathwater ethos so I'll give some advice to hopefully help you resolve this one with the least fuss! I'm guessing you've tried the bed for longer than a week and our advice is based on that assumption, sometimes if takes a week or two to get used to it. back pain though is not usually something that should continue once you've adjusted to it.
The soft spring should certainly be ok for you if the medium felt too firm. So I doubt its the spring tension.

I don't think replacing the slats is the answer, it will still feel firm and I believe what you need is a slightly softer ride with the mattress. Which leads me to suggest that a sprung edge divan is really the only option other than replacing the mattress. If you paired the Vispring Realm mattress up with this it will give you a softer overall feel. The best way to describe it is that the mattress will feel like it's on suspension. Sinking slightly further than normal.
