How to avoid mold on a Memory Foam mattress
If taken care of properly, can I avoid having mold grow in a memory foam mattress?
Hi,
Thanks for contacting us regarding how to avoid mould on a memory foam mattress.
There is an awful lot of people on line asking this question so lets look at ways in which this can be avoided.
Mould is usually caused by poor ventilation, drinks being spilt on to the surface of the mattress and sweat which is why it is very important that you use a mattress protector as this protects the mattress against these issues.
Mould also needs a warm environment in which to grow, anything between 21 and 30 degrees so the ideal temperature should be around 20 degrees. However mould can also grow if the environment is very humid and if this is the case then by using a de-humidifier, this can help to keep mould at bay or at least keep your room aired such as opening windows in the day time so that fresh air is allowed to circulate. It should also be noted that if a mattress is only able to be rotated around and has been allowed to sit on the floor rather than on a base, this can also cause mould due again to lack of ventilation. It is always better to have a mattress which can be fully flipped over as this can also assist in keeping mold issues away, such as a traditional pocket sprung mattress as these contain fibres and fillings on both sides with the internal spring unit in the centre.
If your mattress has developed mould, then you can clean the mattress if you follow the below tips.
You would first need to vacuum both sides of the mattress thoroughly. Even on a non-turnable mattress, it’s advisable to thoroughly vacuum both sides. Once you have done this ensure that you fully empty your vacuum in order to prevent any further spread of the mould.
Using warm soapy water, deploy a circular motion to clean the affected area with a damp cloth. Ensure that you don’t soak the cloth that you’re using as this will only exacerbate the situation by adding further moisture to the area.
Once this is done, allow as much air to the mattress as you can in order to let it dry and ventilate. The ideal way to do this is to allow direct sunlight to the mattress. If this can’t be done, just allow as much air as possible to it.
We hope the above is of assistance to you however should you require further information or advice, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephoning our office on 0161 437 4419 and speaking to one of our friendly team.
Kind regards Julie
