10 cm mattress topper or base to ease John Lewis firm mattress

We wavered between firm and medium when buying John Lewis own brand mattress (£799 for 150cm width) thinking firm would ease slightly and medium was not firm enough. After 2 years it hasn't. Tried a couple of toppers and I'm wondering if a sprung bed base laid on the wooden base below the mattress would be an answer. Or even a good quality slatted base perhaps with a 7-10 cm frame rather than the usual 5 cms to give adequate clearance for the springs bending

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your question.

I wouldn't really advocate using a sprung bed base with wood on top as you wouldn't really be getting any benefit as you'd be eliminating the purpose of the sprung base.

As such I'd be inclined to recommend a high depth mattress topper instead. Generally, you should be pairing the same material in the mattress with the topper so foam with foam, latex with latex etc. As such I'd recommend you have a look at an online retailer called Soak and Sleep. These have a much wider range of toppers than we retail and usually we'd recommend something along the lines of wool or microfibres but they would be better able to assist with advice on their own products.
