9st and 16st sleepers looking for a zip and link mattress for a slatted base -advice please
Hi,
My husband and I are looking for a new super king mattress.
I was hoping you could provide some recommendations.
We are both side sleepers, and we might go for one of your zip and link mattresses because motion isolation is a key feature for us.
Here are some additional details:
Me: Height 5ft 7in, Weight 9st 6lb
My husband: Height 6ft, Weight 16st
Our budget is c. £2.5k. and our bed has sprung beech slats.
Thanks for your help.
Kind Regards

Hi Jaz,
Thank you for your question. A zip and link mattress is ideal for larger mattresses if you have limited access to get the mattress to your room of choice and they are much easier to turn over. With a traditional pocket sprung mattress, the pocket springs within the mattress are only active when you are lying on them and they are not connected directly with the adjoining springs which greatly reduces motion disturbance but a zip and link mattress eliminates it.
How would you like the mattress to feel? The upholstery layers on top of the springs determine how the mattress feels depending on the amount of each fibre and the way that they are layered. As side sleepers, we do not recommend a firm level of comfort as this can cause pressure pains in your shoulders and hips. We would recommend either softer or medium levels of comfort. If you are unsure of your comfort preferences, we recommend opting for the firmer of the two to which you can add a mattress topper if too firm as you can not firm up a mattress that is too soft. We have two medium comfort mattresses that are within your budget, the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 which is constructed with 85% natural fibres and the Origins Pocket 1500 which is predominantly a manmade fibre mattress.
The gauge of wire used to make the springs determines the spring tension. The correct level of support from the springs depends on your height and body weight. The medium spring tension will provide the correct level of support for both of you.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
Sometimes with a sprung slatted base, a mattress can sit at the top of the arches rather than push them down. This can make you roll into the middle or look as if the mattress has sagged in the middle. There are many contributing factors as to why this happens sometimes and not others. If it does happen, this is due to there not being any support for the centre of the mattress, placing a piece of MDF or plywood along the centre bridging the two arches will solve the problem. What is the space between your slats? If this is less than 3 inches we recommend covering the slats with an old or cheap duvet or blanket to protect the underside of the mattress from indentations and possible staining. If the gap is larger than 3 inches you would need to board over the slats with MDF or plywood to prevent the spring from settling in the gap which would mean you would not be supported properly and it would damage your mattress.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
