Advice and recommendation on a new mattress for two sleepers
I’d really appreciate your advice on which of your mattresses would best suit us.
I’m 72 kg and sleep mostly on my side. My husband is 106 kg and sleeps on his side and back. He prefers a firm mattress, I prefer a medium, but then maybe I need a firm to alleviate my pain in my hips. As our current medium pillow-top pocket spring mattress (on a solid base) is failing — it’s developed a “banana” shape, with visible dips where we lie, and I’m now getting hip and nerve-type pain (pins, tingling, “dead leg”).
We’re looking for a mattress that’s designed to last, with proper hip and lumbar support and enough shoulder give. I’m very wary of “rotate-only” designs, I can’t see how they prevent sleeping in body impressions, so if sagging is inevitable I’d much rather have a mattress that can be flipped to even out wear. Although I feel that the mattress with latex might be my best option as they sping back.
Could you please recommend the most suitable model and spring tension for us, and explain your view on rotate-only vs flippable designs?
thanks.
Hi Louise,
Thank you for reaching out to us through our question page regarding your interest in a new mattress.
When selecting a new mattress, it's important to ensure you achieve both the right level of support and the right level of comfort. The support comes from the internal spring system, which is tailored to your body weight and height. On the other hand, comfort is determined by the upholstery materials that sit atop the spring unit, which are typically influenced by your preferred sleeping positions.
Based on your body weight and height, you would benefit from a medium level of support, while your husband is nearing the threshold for a firmer support system.
Side sleepers typically find comfort in softer or medium options, as these provide the necessary cushioning for the shoulders and hips. In contrast, individuals who sleep on their backs and sides usually benefit from a medium level of comfort. This is because when sleeping on your side, you need that extra padding, while back sleepers require the comfort layers to properly align the spine for optimal support.

It seems that the mattress you are currently using may be a bit too firm for your needs, as you've mentioned experiencing hip pain and sensations of pins and needles. It's important to note that pillow-top mattresses can significantly shorten the lifespan of your bed. Once the padding compresses, it can no longer provide the support you need, which may lead to having to replace the mattress sooner than expected. Pillow-top mattresses may initially seem comfortable, but they often have a limited lifespan. While they provide a plush feel at first, the padding is permanently attached to the mattress, either through gluing or stitching. Once this cushioning compresses, it loses its ability to offer the support you need, which can lead to a quicker need for replacement.
While you prefer a medium feel for your mattress, your husband leans towards a firmer option. Unfortunately, we cannot create a mattress that offers different comfort levels on each side. However, we can customize the internal spring system to accommodate your individual body weights—providing a medium spring for you and a firmer spring for your husband. Please note that the upholstery materials will remain the same for both sides. I suggest considering a mattress with a medium comfort level. This option will offer the necessary cushioning for your hips while also ensuring that your husband's spine remains properly aligned.
We offer two collections of fully flippable pocket sprung mattresses. However, since you’re looking for a mattress that combines both medium and firm spring tensions, it’s important to note that this can only be achieved with a single-piece mattress from our Artisan Range. These exceptional mattresses feature a handcrafted spring unit along with natural fibres, ensuring both comfort and quality.
I recommend considering either the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 or the Artisan Naturals. The Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 features 85% natural fibres and 2000 spunbond pocket springs, offering a comfortable medium level of comfort. It can also be customized with medium or firm spring tensions to meet your needs. On the other hand, the Artisan Naturals also contains 85% natural fibres but is designed with 1600 calico-encased pocket springs for enhanced breathability. This option can similarly be adjusted to provide medium or firm support.
